This small riverside town is as pretty as it can get. If you are a backpacker looking for some solitude, Hpa An is the place to be in. Located beside Thanlwin River, about 270 kilometres away from Yangon, Hpa An will mesmerise you with its caves and surrounding mountains.

The town is surrounded by stunning karst mountains rising from green undulating plains. The mountains have many caves that you can explore. The entire landscape is unique and outstandingly beautiful. Mount Zwegabin, a monolithic hill, is located about 16 kilometres away from the town and is great for enjoying some serious hiking.

SHWE YIN MYAW PAYA

You will find this pagoda at the northwest end of the town, located beside the river. Head to the pagoda during sunset to enjoy the picturesque view of the entire landscape as the sun goes down. The pagoda has a watchtower where you can relish the sunset.

SADDAN CAVE

This is an enormous cave featuring a statue of reclining Buddha and other religious monuments. There are a lake and a meadow at the end of this cave, which leads the way to another cave. You can take a boat and cross the river to go to other caves.

BAT CAVE

This small cave is home to thousands of bats that keep flying in and out. The cave is part of a pagoda complex and holds several pagodas. You will find a ladder on the top of one rock, which leads to amazing views of the river.
