KYAING TONG

This trading town in Shan State goes by multiple names due to the influence of the Chinese and Thai people. Kyaing Tong is also known as Keng Tung, Chiang Tung, Cheingtung and Kengtong. This township has a vibrant environment filled with an authentic village experience featuring an assortment of ethnic groups. Tourists will enjoy sight-seeing around this town along with a memorable adventure in nature.

History

An interesting myth surrounds this town of many names. A long time ago, Kyaing Tong was covered with so much water, that seven tall hills were the only land. Siddharta Gautama arrived at the town one day and prophesied that a hermit named TonGa will help dry the overflowing lake. As many as 150 years later, TonGa arrived, and it took him seven days and nights to drain the lake. One small portion of the lake remained with some water in it, at the centre of town.

This town was ruled by multiple ethnic groups like the Wa, Shan, Kung and even the people of Thailand. Now, Kyaing Tong is a peaceful town with different ethnic groups living together in harmony. Tourists can easily find villagers who are Shan, Akha, Lahu, Wa, Palaung, and even Chinese.

How To Get There

By Road

Tourists are required to request for a car permit if you plan to drive a car within the town. The other travelling method around town is by motorcycle.

By Air

Kyaing Tong is a new tourist destination. It is best to reach this town through domestic flights available from Yangon, Heho, Tachleik and Mandalay. 

Top Attractions

Tourists will enjoy a relaxing stroll within the town as they interact with locals from numerous ethnic groups. Loimwe town is famous for its breathtaking landscape backdrop that surely provides a boost in one’s social media feed. There are religious sites, nature locations and traditional markets to be explored further. Watching the sunset here is a plus point, as the sun slowly disappears into the horizon without a single disturbance from loud city noise or bright lights.

 

The town’s central market is a fascinating mix of diverse hill tribes, each bringing their own distinct products and handicrafts to sell. You will find Thai cosmetics, fresh produce, and breakfast stalls where you can taste some new dishes you have never tried before.

 

Aside from that, you can also view the town’s history from the Roman structures such as the Immaculate Heart Cathedral and Colony House, all ancient sites that date back to the colonial era.

Explore Nature

The town’s hilly landscape allows tourists to enjoy hike up to the peak where they can admire the scenic view of the town from above. Tourists can also spot yellow paddy fields from the peak. Visitors will encounter several ethnic groups on their way to the peak. Loimwe town is another antique town that gifts tourists with a charming scenery of the amazing landscape.

The Standing Buddha

Wat Jom Sak is a religious site worth visiting if tourists like to admire Buddha images. Here, visitors can find a standing Buddha image that is about 18 metres tall. Wat Jom Sak overlooks a serene lake called Naung Tong, and the sunset here is awe-inspiring.

Vibrant Markets

It is best to wake up early to visit the traditional markets of Kyaing Tong. Plenty of goods and harvest are sold by men and women in traditional wear. This is where visitors can taste the traditional food and beverages made by the locals. There are also many handicrafts that can be bought as souvenirs. Tourists can also meet Akha women who put on traditional clothes every day, coupled with shiny linked silver belts.

Buffalo Market

This is not a common sight as locals gather at this market to buy and sell buffaloes. Strong buffaloes are brought to the market ad locals would pick out one to be brought home. These buffaloes are then used for their meat, milk or for transportation purposes.
